Portugal ranks 2nd in 5G usage among countries of comparable size

With a 43.3% share of 5G tests conducted between January and July 2026, Portugal ranks second—behind Austria (48.2%)—among countries of similar surface area, according to data from nPerf.

This technology enables smoother experiences, such as downloading large files or high-quality streaming, with notable differences observed among the countries in the ranking.

Portugal leads the pack

Portugal accounts for a 43.3% share of 5G tests performed, placing it just behind Austria (48.2%). It outperforms Slovakia (41.8%), the Czech Republic (41.7%), Ireland (41.1%), Croatia (40.3%), Greece (39.9%), Bulgaria (26.4%), and Tunisia (13.5%).

Marked differences in 5G uptake

The gap between Austria and Portugal is 4.9 percentage points, while the latter leads Slovakia by 1.5 points. These discrepancies translate into unequal access to demanding use cases, such as streaming 4K video or instantly sharing files several gigabytes in size. The ranking, based on the share of 5G tests, thus reflects infrastructure disparities among these countries.
