Portuguese bank BPI has knocked Santander Totta off its top spot as Portugal’s best bank according to the international banking and finance magazine Euromoney.

The bank has been recognised for its growth strategy, digital innovation and social commitments.

BPI received the Euromoney award of “Best Bank in Portugal” at the magazine’s 27th gala Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2018. Previously, Santander had picked up the award for 17 consecutive years.

Euromoney magazine, which is based in London, is recognised for its influence in the financial markets. Founded in 1969 it specialises in international financial and banking news and issues for over 145,000 readers.

It’s the first time that the bank, whose Chairman is Fernando Ulrich and CEO is Pablo Forero has won the award. “On the one hand it reflects the confidence of our clients; and is, on the other hand, a ringing endorsement of the quality of its assets — the best in the financial system in Portugal – without forgetting the progressive improvement in the profitability of its domestic activities, as seen in the bank’s excellent results in the past year.”

“Euromoney highlights the growth in BPI results in 2017, the year in which the bank recorded its greatest profits in the last decade in the domestic market, increasing its market share across all segments in which it operates, achieving a record number of clients,” says CEO Pablo Ferero in a statement.

Pablo Ferero adds that with the bank’s entry in the CaixaBank Group, BPI has the capital to grow and reinforce its financing to the economy, invest in digital transformation and promote the development of human resources.
