The readers of Condé Nast Traveller have voted Portugal the Best Country in the World in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

According to the magazine, Portugal gets “better and better, not only valued because of its beaches, but also its wine and food”.
It is ahead of destinations like New Zealand, Japan, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Italy, Iceland, Greece, Croatia and Turkey which are in the top 10.
This year over 800,000 voters voted and also chose Porto as their second favourite city, overtaken only by Istanbul, followed by San Sebastián in Spain and Salzburg in Austria.
The São Lourenço do Barrocal hotel in the Alentejo was elected the Best Hotel in Portugal and Spain. Quite why when it is in Portugal is a mystery. The magazine says the hotel offers “a serene stay in a untamed and evocative landscape”.
Divia Thani, director of Condé Nast Traveller says: “As travel restrictions are reduced it is becoming clear that our readers have been spending a large part of the last year and a half dreaming about trips and planning adventures. The diversity and vibe from the winners of our Readers’ Choice Award represents a desire to travel around the world and experience the best that the travel industry has to offer”.
