Madeira nominated for best European cruise ship destination

Both Madeira and Lisbon have once again been nominated as candidates for the ‘Best European Cruise Ship Destination’ by the World Cruise Awards.

The regions will try and compete for the award for he second year running but faces competition from Athens, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Kotor, London, Monte Carlo, Nice, Oslo and Rome. The voting will be online until September 15.
In the high season of 2022-2023 the Ports of Madeira registered 557,824 passengers (284,056 for 2021-20222) which represents a growth of 104% on the like-for-like period.
From September 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, the average number of passengers disembarking stood at 1,949, an increase of 109% on the 931 in 2021/2022. For the same period there were 286 stop-overs, eight fewer than in the previous season which is down to the sector getting back to normal after the pandemic.
The ‘World Cruise Awards’ were first awarded in 2021. The event is considered the ‘brother’ of the World Travel Awards which were created in 1993 and are considered the ‘Oscars’ of Tourism. Madeira has won in the category ‘Best Island Destination in Europe’ eight times and the ‘Best Island Destination in the World seven times’.
