Tourism 131.4% up on 2021

The number of tourists in Portugal skyrocketed by 131.4% in 2022 on 2021 but is still below 2019 numbers according to Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE).

The number of non-resident tourists in 2022 stood at 22.3 million, which means an increase of 131.4% on 2021, being below 2019 levels (-9.6%) according to estimates released by the INE on June 6.
The Spanish market was the main market of origin for international tourists (25.8% market share), having grown 97.4% on the previous year. The French market (13.3%) continued in second place, (it was 3rd in 2019), increasing by 91.1%. Tourists from the UK (13.2%) was the third main market in 2022, also registering a positive variation rate. (+186.8%)
Rural accommodation welcomed 28.9 million guests in 2022, the equivalent of 77.2 overnight stays and an increase of 80.7% and 81.1% respectively (+36.9%) and +40.7%), respectively on 2021), being slightly below 2019 levels (-2.2%) and -0.8%, respectively).
Portuguese tourists were responsible for 27.5 million overnight stays, up 22.2% in 2022 (+5.3%) on 2019). Non-resident overnight stays increased +146.9%; -3.9% on 2019, corresponding to €49.7 million.
All regions saw an increase in overnight stays, with the Lisbon Metropolitan Area with +121.1%, Madeira (+90.9%), and North Portugal (+86.6), while Alentejo and the Centre grew +29.8% and +55.5% respectively.
