The port of Lisbon handled 5.507 million tonnes of goods in the first half of this year, a slight growth of 0.20% year-on-year, according to a statement from the company.

The Port of Lisbon Administration (APL) highlighted the 16% increase in general cargo “which handled 2.505 million tonnes, driven by the increase in containerised cargo, which was 12% in TEU [container measure] and 16% in tonnage, with a value of 2.393 million tonnes”.

APL also reported the growth seen “in the number of cargo ships, with an increase of 13.5%, corresponding to 939 stopovers, 112 more than in 2023″, it indicated. According to the APL, this growth contributed to “the overall recovery of the Alcântara Container Terminal (Yilport Liscont), which recorded an increase, in the first half of this year, of 40% in tonnage handled and 35% in TEU”.

This recovery, it assured, “resulted from an increase in the connectivity of this terminal, which has achieved a greater number of stopovers” with direct services to the United States and South America. APL also reported on the performance of the Lisbon Multipurpose Terminal, with “a growth of 12% in tonnage handled and 10% in TEU” compared to the same period last year.

With regard to solid bulk, “2.259 million tons were handled in the first six months of 2024, which corresponds to a decrease of 13% compared to 2023, which is essentially explained by the breakdowns that occurred at the Silopor Trafaria Terminal”. In the case of liquid bulk. “This remained at 2023 values, that is, €742,000 tons handled at the Port of Lisbon during the first six months of 2024”.
