Portuguese pharmaceutical company Bial announced on Tuesday that the Phase 2b (activate) clinical trial evaluating drug BIA 28-6156 in patients with Parkinson’s disease, which was the most advanced compound in the company’s pipeline, “did not meet the primary or secondary efficacy endpoints.”

Although the study provides “relevant scientific information and contributes to a better understanding” of the biology of Parkinson’s disease, “it did not demonstrate a significant difference compared to placebo in the primary and main secondary endpoints.”

“Based on the lack of demonstrated efficacy in this study, Bial has decided to discontinue the development of BIA 28-6156 for this indication,” the Trofa-based company stated.
