Lisbon region wines in sights of international investors
Climate change, increased investment selectivity, and shifts in consumption patterns are driving a structural transformation in the global wine industry with wines from certain Portuguese regions such as Lisbon in the ascendancy.
This is one of the conclusions of The Wealth Report, the annual report by Knight Frank, a leading independent global real estate consultancy, of which the Portuguese company Quintela & Penalva has been a member since 2021.
According to this study, higher altitude regions are gaining enormous relevance due to their production of light, fresh, and less alcoholic wines.
In Portugal, this is the case of the Douro and Dão regions, which stand out for their international recognition, but they are not the only regions in Portugal in the spotlight.
Bairrada, Vinho Verde, and Lisbon the regions to watch.
Referred to in The Wealth Report as ‘Regions to Watch’, both Bairrada, known for its traditional sparkling wines and wines with elegant acidity, and Lisbon, where there is a great diversity of styles, such as Vinho Verde, are Atlantic regions highlighted in this report as new benchmarks in the global wine sector.
These three Portuguese demarcated regions, seen by winemakers as areas where their wines can acquire a fresh and modern character, in order to address changes in consumption patterns, are entering the global radar for the focus on fresh and less alcoholic wines, meeting new consumption trends.
Portugal is therefore positioning itself as one of the main candidates to lead a new phase in the wine sector, where investment in wines and vineyards has become something of extreme interest for those seeking to invest strategically in areas with great potential for appreciation.
In France, the regions of Anjou, Saumur, and Touraine in the Loire Valley stand out; in Germany, the regions of Mosel, Rheingau, and Pfalz; in Austria, Kamptalm Kremstal, Wachau, and Burgenland; in Italy, Alto Adige and Friuli, near the Swiss Alps; and in the United Kingdom, all regions.
