The Portuguese company Gallo which produces olive oil and other condiments such as vinegar has launched the first port wine vinegar in the world.

It is the first time that a brand has created a vinegar with a sweet touch which at the same time is smooth, robust and contains the world-famous port wine.

The company had already made a first by creating Madeira Wine Vinegar and according to Gallo, Europe is “the main vinegar market globally with the highest consumption per capita”.

In Portugal olive oil is present in 72% of all households while vinegar is in 76% of all households. The vinegar category has enjoyed a growing trend in recent years and in the first half of 2018 it grew 6% in value compared to the same period last year according to data from Nielsen.

The new Gallo Port Wine Vinegar is produced and bottled in the Douro Valley and has the seal of the Institute of Douro and Port Wines being sold at €4.99 a bottle.

“This is a unique product the bolsters the brand’s investment and commitment to showcasing the very best that Portugal has to offer” says Susana Costa, Gallo brand marketing manager.

Gallo’s objective is to take this unique product overseas. “We want the great national and international chefs to discover this port wine vinegar which offers a taste that is uniquely Portuguese but with a sophisticated twist” she adds.
