The Pestana Group is to invest €3 million in a new historic hotel or pousada in Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve.

The hotel will have 57 rooms, a restaurant and events room with construction expected to start shortly with opening slated for 2019 according to information released by the town’s municipal council.

“The Pestana Group’s private investment — the group is responsible for a chain of historic inns and hotels around Portugal – is estimated to be €3 million and will create around 30 jobs. It is expected that the refurbishment works on the existing buildings located on Praça Marquês de Pombal, will take around one year” states the Council.

The Pousada de Vila Real de Santo António will occupy four buildings of historical interest which are owned by the Council’s municipal company Sociedade de Gestão Urbana while the hotel’s concept will be linked to the history of Vila Real de Santo António, creating a new tourism segment based on “heritage and local culture” according to the municipal authority.

The Pestana Hotel Group has 16 hotel units in the Algarve, including 13 Pestana Hotels & Resorts and three Pousadas de Portugal (Palácio de Estoi, in Faro, Fortaleza de Sagres and the Convento de Tavira), with the hotel at Vila Real de Santo António representing the fourth Pousada de Portugal in the region and the 17th Grupo Pestana hotel unit in the Algarve.
