John Daniel is the Managing Partner of GEG Engineering – an international ­engineering design and consultancy company, headquartered in Porto, since 1987.
GEG develops multidisciplinary engineering services, consultancy and ­management responsibilities, assuring the client the control of all the stages of the process, from the economic feasibility and value engineering studies, to design, project management and construction supervision.
GEG works globally with partners, clients and owners, looking for solutions to the challenges of each project, with ingenuity, art and “Engineering Structures for Life”.
Since 2005 John Daniel has participated in the internationalisation of GEG, managing contracts in various countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Oman, Quatar, United Arab Emirates, Libia, Mozambique and Jamaica.

What made you choose this country to base your business?
Portugal has a low crime rate and is generally safe and stable

Was it difficult to adapt to life in Portugal after coming from the United States?
It was hard getting to grips with the bureaucracy and the red tape, nothing is quite as easy as it first seems

What do you most like about Portugal and the Portuguese?
Safety and Climate. It’s a great place to raise a Family

What do you least like?
The lack of medium and long term planning.

Which is your favourite region in Portugal?
Douro Region

Name your favourite restaurant (and why you like it?)
In Porto I like the new Restaurant Enoteca, it has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and the food & wine are amazing

What is your favourite Portuguese food (dish or ingredient)?
Cozido à Portuguesa

And your favourite Portuguese wine (and grape variety and wine region)?
Chryseia Red Wine from the Douro Region
