Mergers and acquisitions by Portuguese companies overseas and overseas companies in Portugal have moved around €9.5Bn between January and September

There were 361 operations registered by the end of Q3 2021 which represents an increase of 25% according to data from Transactional Track Record and Datasite.
The number of transactions saw a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2020. In the third quarter alone 141 mergers and acquisitions were accounted from among those announced and completed — a total of €4.1Bn.
However, there was a 38% reduction in mobilised capital in the first nine months of the year. Spain was the country which most invested in Portugal with 47 operations. The US came in second place with 29 operations.
US companies increased 141% in terms of their acquisitions in the Portuguese market, mobilising €1.1Bn while the British made 20 purchases.
“Portuguese companies chose Spain as their main investment destination, with 19 transactions. This was followed by Brazil and the United Kingdom with five operations each”, states the TTR on the country.
The technology sector led the ranking as the most active, with 68 transactions, with real estate in second position with 53 operations and the financial sector (banks and insurance) in third with 39 transactions.
“Overseas acquisitions in the internet and technology sector increased 176% in comparison to the same period in 2020.
“In relation to overseas private equity and venture capital funds which invested in Portuguese companies, there was a fall of 21% to September 2021” states TTR.
The deal of the quarter, with a capital increase of €177 million, was Greenvolt (pictured) regarding the Initial Public Offering completed by the Altri-owned renewable energy company with support from CaixaBank, Banco Santander, BNP Paribas, JB Capital Markets, Vieira de Almeida and PLMJ.
