The Vila Galé hotel group is to invest €12 million in the Azores, turning the former hospital in São Miguel into a hotel under its brand ‘Collection’.

Portugal’s second largest hotel group, after the Pestana Group, will pursue the project in a partnership with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ponta Delgada.
The four-star hotel will have a theme, probably the history of the Azores. It will have 93 rooms, a restaurant, operating under the ‘Collection’ brand, the hotel group’s premium brand.
The investment will be around €12 million, and refurbishment should begin in March, with works expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.
“We made a partnership with Misericórdia de Braga where we did a beautiful hotel (Vila Galé Collection Braga), and the developer for Misericórdia de Ponta Delgada was impressed and invited us to do something similar for the old hospital”, says the CEO of Vila Galé Group Jorge Rebelo de Almeida.
Vila Galé will be responsible for the works and will run the hotel through a 50-year concession according to the online news source ECO.
Jorge Rebelo de Almeida said: “It has been a long-time dream to have a hotel in the Azores. The location is extraordinary”
The Vila Galé Group has 37 hotels — six of which are under the Collection brand, of which 10 are in Brazil, a market where the hotel chain has a significant presence and investment.
