Portugal will be the first country in the world to produce green ammonia on an industrial scale from 2026 according to the CEO of Madoqua Renewables Rogaciano Rebelo.

To the end of 2026 the Portuguese-Dutch consortium MadoquaPower2X expects to begin exporting green ammonia from the Port of Sines. Green ammonia is a bio-fuel which is produced from renewable hydrogen.
In an interview with Jornal de Negócios, the CEO said: “Portugal will be the first country in the world to produce green ammonia on an industrial scale” and that it will be able to “supply other countries”.
The project involves an investment of €1Bn with the construction of 500MW electrolyzers that will enable the production of green hydrogen and 500,000 tones of green ammonia a year.
That amount also includes solar and wind energy production and infrastructure to bring energy to Sines.
“We will then supply ships to take the products to Rotterdam where the ammonia and green hydrogen will be stored in tanks. It will also be exported to Sweden, the US and South America and Portugal’s importance in this area which increase”, said Rogaciano Rebelo to newspaper Negócios. All licensing formalities should be completed by the end of this year.
