Alentejo ladies are trailblazers in inventions

Portugal’s Alentejo region is the region of Europe that has spawned the most patents for new inventions from lady entrepreneurs.

A study from the European Patents Institute says that Portugal comes in second place in terms of the number of women inventors, double the European average.
Applications from Portugal for patents between 2010 and 2019 reveal that 26.8% were from women (the European average is 13.2%). The institute also concludes that all the regions in Europe, the Alentejo is the region with the greatest percentage of women inventors. (34.9%)
Only Lithuania had a greater number of women inventors. Behind Portugal comes Croatia (25.8%) and Spain (23.2%). Germany, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein and Austria occupied the next positions in the ranking.
However, worldwide South Korea topped the table with 28.3% of women inventors, followed by China (26.8%), and the US (15%). At the end of the 1970s, just 2% of applicants for patents were women.
