New Golden Visas frozen from February 16

All applications for Portugal’s Golden Visa from 16 February this year are to be frozen and any new applications will not be accepted.

The decision was taken to avoid a sudden rush to get applications in before the new law comes into force which effectively terminates the programme after 12 years and nearly €6Bn of investment.
However, existing holders will still be able to renew their visas but they must prove permanent residency for themselves, or as the residence of their children, or rent out the property for at least five years.
February 16 was chosen as the cutoff date because it was the date when the Government announced its Housing Package and announced the termination of the visa scheme.
Those that want to renew their visas because they are about to expire and do not live in the property for tax purposes will have 90 days to do so by presenting their rental contract, or a document that proves they are resident in Portugal for tax purposes.
