Shortlist of nine options for new Lisbon airport

A Portuguese commission hired to study the technical and scientific viability options for expanding Lisbon’s airport capacity has announced nine possible choices for Lisbon’s new International airport.

The five choices that had already been advanced by the Government are: Portela+Montijo; Montijo+Portela; Alcochete; Portela +Santarém; and Santarém.
To these have been added Portela+Alcochete; Pegões; Portela+Pegões; and Rio Frio+Poceirão.
The list of options which will now go forward to the next set of evaluation phases according to the General Coordinator of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), Rosário Partidário.
Rosário Partidário gave a presentation that took place in Lisbon on Thursday on the results of the first phase of the Strategic Environmental Evaluation on increasing airport capacity for the Lisbon region.
The final report with recommendations will be presented to the Government by the 31 December 2023. The final decision on the location of Lisbon’s new airport will lie with the government.
