Public sector staff earn more than private
The average public sector worker earns more in Portugal than the average private sector employee according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
A public sector worker takes home an average salary of €2,019 gross, while in the private sector the average salary is just €1,335. This means that a State employee earns 51% on average more than a private sector employee.
However, State employees are the most qualified by far: 55.2% have a university degree or other higher national diploma compared to 22.7% in the private sector.
The average age of public sector staff is 53 years while in the private sector it is 43 – a 10-year gap.
