Clothing textile exports fall 2.1% in October
The Portuguese Association of Textiles and Clothing (ATP) says exports of clothing and textiles fell by 2.1% in October to €482 million, but increased in volume by 0.6% like-for-like on 2022 to a total of 38,000 tonnes, “an improvement on recent months”.
The higher exports turnover was largely driven by exports to the United States market while the poorer performance in revenues overall was down to less goods purchased from neighbouring Spain.
Home furnishings and other textile goods saw an increase of 9% in value and 6% in volume for the month.
Good results were also registered for textile pastes, felts, durable non-wovens, and cord, rope and twine items (+9% in value and +11% in value) to €41.3 million.
The biggest drop in Portuguese exports to a foreign market was Spain which was down €6 million or-5% of a total of €116 million sent to that market.
In accumulated terms, from the start of 2023 to the end of October Portuguese textile and clothing exports were worth €4.8Bn, down 5% on the same period in 2022.
