Corticeira Amorim elected most sustainable company in the wine sector by Finance Magazine
World Finance Magazine has elected the Portuguese multinational cork giant Corticeira Amorim the ‘Most Sustainable Company’ in the ‘Wine Products Industry’ category at the World Finance Magazine Sustainability Awards.
Distinguished for the fourth year running, the Portuguese company was recognised for the promotion of cork oak forests, biodiversity and ecosystem services, through promotion, support and investment in Research & Development + Innovation, and the implementation of the best principles, models and practices of the circular economy.
These premises are the basis for an extensive portfolio of products, solutions and technologies that deliver superior technical performance, always combined with sustainability credentials that are unparalleled in the market. Recognising the need to take action in order to decarbonise industries, this edition of the World Finance Sustainability Awards has distinguished companies that have demonstrated a true commitment to reducing emissions throughout their value chain.
The jury underlined Corticeira Amorim’s commitment to sustainability, aligned with the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative, membership of the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders initiative and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certification of most of its processing units.
Other decisive factors underlying the award included energy efficiency, responsible management of supplies and the positive environmental impact of the company’s products. Value was placed on the promotion of training, safety and well-being, as well as the social, personal and professional development of all the company’s employees.
The jury also highlighted “Corticeira Amorim’s long-term value proposition, the issuance of €40 million in green bonds, continuous investment in R&D+i in the amount of €10 million/year, and its sustainability strategy, based on environmental, social and economic pillars”.
The jury of the Sustainability Awards of the World Finance magazine praised the negative CO2 balance of Corticeira Amorim’s cork stoppers, that make a “relevant contribution to decarbonisation of the wine industry”.
The entire range of product families of Amorim Cork – Corticeira Amorim’s Cork Stoppers Business Unit – now have an official certification of their negative carbon balance, including natural cork stoppers, sparkling wine stoppers, micro-agglomerated stoppers and bartop stoppers. This offers a significant competitive advantage over the competition, that consolidates the company’s commitment to be the first choice of customers on grounds of quality, performance and sustainability.
António Rios de Amorim, Corticeira Amorim’s Chairman and CEO, expressed his great “satisfaction with this renewed distinction from the World Finance magazine.
This award reinforces a broad range of responsibilities that we address with tremendous determination and optimism: efficient resource management, protection of ecosystems, reduction of waste, promotion of sustainable consumption and the circularity of processes, policies for the development and empowerment of our people.”
