Simple solar projects don’t need subsidies says Greenvolt boss
Energy sustainability is no longer a luxury for companies, but a necessity, as well as offering benefits in terms of image, it helps the bottom line through lower costs and eventual sale of electricity to neighbours.
So says João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt and one of the most respected managers in the field of renewable energy during a podcast from online news source ECO called “Future Proof.”
José Manso Neto says that it is urgent for companies to start placing, for example, solar panels on rooftops for self-consumption and sharing with other companies, or even public entities such as hospitals. Unfortunately, he points out, the development of this practice is hindered by Portugal’s “addiction” to subsidies, something that Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) has exacerbated. Basic PV panel projects can be self-financed. Recourse to the subsidy is necessary, yes, when the project involves batteries, which are more expensive.
The company boss also said it was a question of mentality, calling on the State to set an example for change by undertaking renewable projects, but admitted there was a lack of capacity in terms of taking a decision, both in the public and private sectors.
