Portugal is the fifth largest coffee producer in Europe according to the EU’s statistical body Eurostat.

Last year Italy was the biggest coffee producer with 556,500 tonnes or 25% of total production in the EU, followed by Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Although the European Union (EU) imports more coffee than it produces, Portugal is one of the member states that stands out as a major producer of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or coffee substitutes, such as cereal drinks with coffee. Last year Portugal produced 49,400 tons, or about 2% of total EU production.

Currently, coffee production is worth about €13Bn, according to data released this Tuesday by Eurostat, as part of the celebration of International Coffee Day. Belgium (49,300 tons) and Finland (42,400 tons) comes just after Portugal in this ranking, both also with 2%.
