Portugal is the OECD country where it is most difficult to buy a house
Portugal is the country in the OECD where it is hardest to purchase a home the organization says.
In fact, finding a home here is more difficult now than at any time since 1995 when OECD records on house-hunting began reports the news source Expresso.
Between July and September of last year, the OECD Housing Affordability Index, which measures the relationship between the evolution of house prices and the evolution of incomes, hit 157.7 points.
It was the highest figure since the OECD has data for the country. The higher the value, the more difficult it is to access housing. This is the worst performance the country has ever recorded and places it as the one where, among the OECD 30 for which data are available, it is most difficult to access housing.
In addition, Portugal was the country where access to housing deteriorated the most. In the third quarter of 2014, the index was at 99.6 points, meaning there was a fall of 58.33% in access to housing. In the third quarter of 2024 it stood at 157.7 points.
