Portuguese have €35Bn invested in savings bonds
Investments in Portuguese savings bonds have soared since the beginning of the year.
According to Jornal de Negócios, since the start of January, €381.4 million were invested in savings bonds – the highest amount since July 2023 and more than compensating the recent period when the public shied away from investing in savings bonds.
According to the Bank of Portugal, investments in the bonds hit a high not seen since December 1998.
Now the total accumulated stock of capital invested in Portuguese savings bonds stands at €35Bn.
And according to the Portuguese post office company CTT which sells the bonds, the trend looks set to continue.
In January, CTT told Lusa that the amount of money invested in bonds through its app stood at €600,000 in January.
That was an increase of more than 80% on December 2024 while over 35,000 customers have linked their bond account to the application since it was launched in July last year.
However, the public are losing interest in investing in Portuguese State treasury bonds with stock falling by almost €155 million (the largest monthly fall in a year.
Taken together, the two State savings products now amount to over €44Bn after a growth of 226 million in January.
