Porto City Council has allocated 436 affordable rental homes as part of the Affordable Housing Programme promoted by Porto Vivo. The municipality estimates that around one thousand people benefit from this municipal drive.

In a statement, the Porto municipality indicates that a draw was held which resulted in the allocation of 25 homes, “thereby continuing to strengthen the municipality’s ability to meet housing needs within the framework of housing access policies.”

With an average monthly rent of €480.41, the rents charged fall within the affordable housing model promoted by the municipality led by Pedro Duarte. In many cases, this amount is supplemented by a rent support mechanism. According to the municipality, 66.6% of households benefit from rent subsidies.

The affordable housing programme promoted by the municipality began in November 2020. The municipality explains that the “housing offer includes homes resulting from the rennovation of buildings promoted by Porto Vivo, SRU, contributing to restoring urban heritage while giving a new lease of life to previously vacant properties”, as well as proving properties from “partnerships with private owners, through the rent-to-sublet mechanism, which allows the integration of private market housing into this municipal model”.
