75% of companies lack manpower

Portugal is the second country where older employees were most absent from the workplace because of sickness according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The problem of a manpower shortage is nothing new, but the Covid-19 pandemic and the time it has taken to recover has only made a situation that was already bad, worse.
Data from the OECD shows that between 2019 and 2021 the number of companies complaining about a lack of manpower rose significantly and got worse in 2022.
“The unprecedented levels of scarcity in manpower and the recruitment difficulties that employers are seeing reinforces the importance of taking measures to attract and retain workers”, say specialists within the organisation, highlighting the importance of paying good salaries, flexibility and even adopting policies that are anti-ageist.
