US online retail giant Amazon has abandoned plans to set up its Portugal headquarters in Porto and has instead chosen Lisbon.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) which supplies computing, warehousing and data base networks has opened an office in the Portuguese capital  to “provide support to a growing clients base in the country”.

It will support startups and some of the older companies in Portugal transition to Cloud AWS.

“We are excited about opening our first AWS offices in the south of Europe. The decision to officially open an office in Lisbon has arisen following many years supporting clients in Portugal to adopt “cloud”.

“We have noticed substantial interest from companies in Portugal which want to move forward using ASW to innovate, reduce their IT costs and grow their organisations worldwide” adds the company in a communiqué.

“We want to promote a pioneer spirit in Portugal with or clients, helping it to accelerate its digital transformation and provide new and innovative products and services”.
