The winners of the 11th edition of the Portuguese Urban Rehabilitation Awards were announced at a ceremony held this week at the National Palace of Ajuda in Lisbon.

The cites of Alcobaça, Lisbon and Porto were the best urban rehabilitation projects in the country in 2023,
Nine projects in 10 different categories were chosen by an independent jury from out of 67 projects from 21 districts in Portugal, including Madeira.
In this edition, Lisbon bagged the best projects in the Residential area while Porto won rehabilitation awards in the Social, Commercial & Services and Structural.
Alcobaça won the award in the Tourism category, while Loulé won the award for the best rehabilitation project under 1000m2.
To these categories awards were handed out for the best projects within the context of Lisbon and Porto.
There were several new aspects for the awards in 2023: PURA have introduced a new award for Masters of Construction; professional who stand out in their specific areas.
In each edition the candidates will be architects, developers, construction companies and professionals whose career and dedication to their ‘art’ deserve recognition.
In 2023, at the suggestion of architect Eduardo Souto Moura, the master builder Humberto Sousa was recognised.
The awards also introduced the Personality Award that will distinguish the merit and the prestige of those people whose career has contributed to Portuguese urban rehabilitation. This year the award went to the architect João Carlos dos Santos, General-Director of Cultural Heritage (DGPC).
