US tourist numbers up 16% and are number 1 guests for Lisbon hotels
The number of American tourists holidaying in Portugal rose 16% in the first four months of the year while revenues from tourists overall are up 10% to €1.4Bn according to Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE).
The figures follow last year’s record number of US tourists making Americans the third most important market for national hotels in terms of guests after the Spanish and the British, totalling 4.6 million in overnight stays, an increase of 33% like-for-like, generating €2.5Bn in revenues.
Almost 140,000 visitors from the US brought the number of foreign visitors to Portugal to a record high by the end of 2023. According to Expesso Americans are now the number one guests in terms of hotel bookings in Lisbon.
In January and February alone, overnight stays from tourists from the US saw a like-for-like growth of 12.6%, the number of guests in hotels was up 13.8% and revenues were up 16.9% according to numbers from Aeroportos de Portugal, Global Data, INE, SIBS, and Turismo de Portugal.
And the number of passengers disembarking from flights from the US rose by 26% (ANA) coming in at 9th place out of all tourists, while US card transactions at Multibanco facilities increased 17.8% like-for-like.
In terms of ranking and market share, the US market was in 4th place (8.5% market share) and in 6h place for those two months for overnight stays (6.7%) and 5th place in terms of revenues (9.1%).
