Portugal is to be the likely location for Lufthansa’s new maintenance hangar serving Southwest Europe.

It comes at a time when the German airline continues to be interested in buying a controlling stake in Portugal’s national operator TAP Air Portugal.

According to the online news source ECO, the airline is to invest in an aircraft maintenance and repairs unit in Southwest Europe and “Portugal is the preferred location for the expansion”, an official source said.

The original source was the airline’s CEO, Carsten Spohr, who apparently divulged the news during a conference with analysts to present the results of the second quarter, at the end of last month.

In a statement to ECO, the group says that “Lufthansa Technik is planning to establish a new unit for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft components and engine parts in Southwest Europe. Portugal is the preferred country for this expansion of our network”. The decision should be made “soon”.
