The Algarve produced 1,982,177 litres of wine in 2024 – a 20% growth in production on 2023.

This is according to figures from Sara Silva, president of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), an entity that has been certifying Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira Denomination of Origin and Algarve Geographical Indication wines since 2012.

“We had a production increase that exceeded our initial expectations. In July, the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV) asks us for forecasts, and we make a survey with our producers. At the time, the estimate already pointed, on average, to about eight to 10% increase in production. Accounts made, we have an effective increase of more than 20% compared to the previous campaign, 2023,” she says.

For 2024, the amount contained in the IVV survey exceeded 1.9 million litres of wine certified with Denomination of Origin and Geographical Indication, and about 100,000 to 200,000 litres of not certified table wine.

“We closed 2024 with 61 registered producers. We have registered an annual average of five to six new producers registered with the CVA. This means that there is more vineyard area for qualified production.

In addition, existing producers are also increasing their vineyard area. They develop their companies in the usual way but are investing on productive capacity. It was a year that was very productive and profitable including for the national market,” says Sara Silva.
