Lisbon Metropolitan Area gets green light to build 10,000 homes
The 18 municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area have the green light to build or refurbish 10,500 homes after the Housing and Urban Rehabilitation Institute (IHRU) validated more than 42% of the applications they submitted under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
Of the 10,500 homes, about 4,700 have already been delivered to families, which corresponds to about 19% of the homes applied for, according to the AML statement. By January of this year, the 18 municipalities of the AML had submitted about 25,000 homes to the housing component of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which, in turn, had stipulated the approval of 26,000 homes for the entire country.
“This high volume of applications is illustrative of the housing shortages felt in the region, as determined by the”Diagnosis of Unworthy Housing Conditions in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area “, presented in November 2022, which identified the existence of about 50,000 households living in these conditions in the Lisbon metropolitan area (about 4% of the total households in the region, an estimated 134,000 people)”, explains the AML.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area, in cooperation with its 18 municipalities, is carrying out an estimate of costs and income from rents related to the management of the public housing stock under the management of the municipalities. The survey, based on responses from municipalities to a survey carried out by the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, will serve to support the need to strengthen the State’s participation in housing development and refurbishment of this housing stock.
