Leica Camera, the renowned German company specialising in cameras and optics, has just opened its first Leica store in Lisbon, a new destination designed to bring together photographers, collectors, and enthusiasts of the brand in the Portuguese capital.

Located at Avenida da Liberdade 258, the store reflects Leica’s ongoing commitment to Portugal and to a growing community of collectors and visual storytellers across the country.

Building on Leica’s long-standing presence in Portugal – from its production facility in Famalicão to the already established Leica Store & Gallery Porto – the new Lisbon location further strengthens the brand’s connection to the country and consolidates its ambition to create spaces where photography, exceptional craftsmanship, and community converge.

This opening coincides with the 20th anniversary of Leica stores, which began with the brand’s first store in Japan. Since that first opening, Leica spaces have been creating an ecosystem designed not only to showcase precision engineering tools but also to foster a dynamic and interconnected photographic community. The Lisbon store is the culmination of this 20-year legacy and joins a network of approximately 120 stores worldwide.

The Lisbon store offers an immersive introduction to the Leica universe in an intimate and inspiring environment. Visitors are invited to discover the brand’s latest innovations in the world of photography and beyond – from its renowned photographic systems to home cinema, classic and pre-owned equipment, sports optics, smartphones and watches – while simultaneously benefiting from expert advice and contact with a community united by a passion for photography. The new space was conceived not only as a store, but also as a meeting point for the Leica community in Portugal: a place to exchange ideas, celebrate photographic culture and support creative expression.

“The opening of Leica in Lisbon represents another strong sign of the development of our global retail strategy, initiated 20 years ago. At the same time, it demonstrates our deep commitment to Portugal for over 50 years,” says Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Leica Camera AG. “We invest specifically in locations that not only bring our products to life, but also create and strengthen lasting relationships with our customers and the creative community. Lisbon, one of Europe’s leading economic centers, is a truly inspiring place for us to continue developing this vision.”

The store also includes a Project Room, an exhibition space designed to showcase the best national and international talent. The Project Room opens with a curated selection of 21 photographs from the exhibition “Leica – A Century of Photography,” presented exclusively for this occasion and marking a unique moment in its programming. This selection offers a brief perspective on a broader journey celebrating Leica’s 100 years through the work of renowned international photographers, bringing together iconic and lesser-known images that reflect Leica’s enduring role in shaping visual culture.

“Lisbon has always been a city of light, stories and soul – values that resonate deeply with Leica. With the opening of our new Leica Store and Leica Project Room, we are not only creating a space for photography, but a home for visionaries, storytellers and moments that deserve to last forever. Here, tradition and creativity meet, and we invite the community to see the world – and Lisbon itself – through a new lens,” says Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director & Chief Representative Leica Galleries International.

This opening represents another step in Leica’s long-term commitment to Portugal and to the photographers who shape its creative landscape. With this new address in Lisbon, Leica establishes a space dedicated to the brand that simultaneously reflects its heritage and its vision for the future.

Leica Akademie in Lisbon

In addition to the new store, a Leica Akademie will also open at Rua Alexandre Herculano 19. Designed for both emerging and experienced photographers, the Leica Akademie offers a space to deepen photographic knowledge through workshops, masterclasses, and practical experiences. Rooted in the Leica philosophy of vision, it provides the tools, knowledge, and perspective necessary to refine individual vision and develop one’s own photographic language.
