Alentejo wine harvest foresees increase in production of 20%
The Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA) estimates a wine production of 108 million litres for the 2026 harvest, representing a growth of approximately 20% compared to the previous year, when the region recorded a production of 87 million litres.
The data, derived from a study conducted in partnership with the University of Porto, point to a positive harvest season with favourable expectations regarding both quantity and quality, in a year where Alentejo vineyards benefited from favourable weather conditions throughout the growing cycle.
The Alentejo harvest is scheduled to begin in the first weeks of August. The 2026 campaign follows a period characterized by well-distributed rainfall, a cold winter, and an absence of significant impacts from the adverse weather events that affected other regions of the country.
“This forecast confirms the positive outlook for the 2026 harvest, a year in which vineyard conditions point to a balanced crop with strong indicators for both quality and yield. These results reinforce producer confidence and Alentejo’s ability to continue establishing itself through the quality of its wines,” states Luís Sequeira, president of the CVRA.
The harvest season holds particular importance in a region that accounts for approximately 40% of the total value of certified wine sales in Portugal, underscoring the economic and strategic significance of Alentejo wines within the national landscape.
This monitoring effort is complemented by the Data+ platform, developed by the CVRA, which aggregates over five million data points regarding the Alentejo wine sector.
The tool enables the tracking of the sector’s evolution through historical and up-to-date information—including data by sub-region, grape variety, and destination markets—thereby facilitating more informed decision-making by economic stakeholders.
