Portugal world leader in food production resilience
Portugal is one of the country’s in the world which stands out for having the greatest resilience when it comes to food production.
This is according to the UK current affairs magazine the Economist which ranked Portugal the number one country globally for food system and farming resilience in its Economist Impact Resilient Food Systems Index.
Portugal achieved an overall score of 76.83 out of 100, outperforming 60 other nations due to exceptional dietary diversity, high food quality, strong nutritional standards, and solid food safety performance.
During a visit to a kiwi farm organised by Kiwicoop in Oliveira do Bairro on Saturday, Portugal’s Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes emphasised the role of agriculture as a national strategic priority, including the production of Kiwi fruit.
The Minister also highlighted that Portugal is a global leader in agri-food resilience—a distinction recognised by The Economist—underscoring that this capacity is crucial for crops such as kiwifruit, which are particularly vulnerable to phytosanitary challenges.
At a pivotal moment for the growth of this sector in Portugal, producers expressed their satisfaction with the Government’s commitment to defending the interests of the kiwifruit industry. They also emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to open new international markets—such as China, Mexico, Argentina, and Egypt—which will help boost the export potential of domestic production.
